Anyone, from a single person wanting a bit of extra cash from a hobby or you can run a very successful company with affiliate marketing employing 100s of people.
A solopreneur, a slashie, hobbyist, a parent, someone with very specialist knowledge or anyone else that that wants to earn extra money then affiliate marketing can be for you.
Parent Bloggers: There’s a lot of mummy, a few daddy and a few whole family bloggers, vloggers and social media influencers out there that do quite well from Affiliate marketing. Many of the bloggers talk about all sorts of subjects; bringing up children, travelling with children, toys, food for kids and money saving tips for children.
Hobbyist: This really can be anything that you’re into, there’s obviously more profitable genres such as travel, fashion, furniture, watches, shoes, photography and even cars. However you can also make money on items such as stamps, gaming, books, DIY equipment, cooking gear, gardening, and loads more. A very popular category at the moment is: toys – Star Wars, He-Man, Transformers, Star Trek, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and LEGO specific blogs, vlogs or social media channels can become very popular and the affiliate cash from sending buyers to ebay or amazon marketplaces or even specific stores can mount up.
Hobby Birdwatching: Even a hobby like bird watching can make a small amount of money, I run What Birds I Spotted Today – where I list the birds that visit my garden, I only have a few small ads on the website for the bird food I use in the garden and they help cover some of the cost of the bird food each year. Obviously if I went into details about telescopes, binoculars or camera equipment I could also advertise for other birding equipment. Another opportunity is advertising wildlife tourism and birding specific travel companies.
Big Companies: There’s huge affiliate companies that make millions from referring customers. A great example is one most people in the UK know Money Saving Expert with the website estimated to be earning around the £30,000,000 to £50,000,000 per year in affiliate sales. The fact it was sold in 2012 for £87,000,000 would put this figure about right. All the sites such as Uswitch, Compare the Market, Money Super Market etc. are affiliate marketing websites. There’s many other affiliate sites that do very well, most of the coupon websites that offer money off are affiliate marketing websites.
Just doing it for the money? These ones may be for you:
Specialists: Finance – this can make a lot of money, anything from simple bank accounts, through in-depth investment products can be listed on affiliate programs. The finance affiliate market is thankfully a lot more regulated than it has been in the past, but you still see websites recommending products that they get the most commission on instead of the best deals.
Specialists: Mobile Phones / Phone plans – another one that can be very profitable, the handsets can often have large mark ups and the plans do too, as it’s meant to be a competitive market instead of dropping the price for the consumer they offer large commissions for affiliate and other advertisers.
Specialists: Furniture – there’s large commissions for furniture, I’ve seen as high as 50% on beds. Most are around the 5% commission, but order values are often around the £1,000, giving you £50, 10 to 20 sales a month is a good passive income.
